The Home Theater Design Process

Every custom home theater, media room, or music listening room is as unique as the individuals and families who enjoy them. If designed and built properly these spaces are matched to the needs and the budget of the owners.

Most projects begin with a given space; an unfinished basement, an existing room, or even a blank space defined only by concrete foundation walls. And most projects also begin with at least some ideas or expectations of the owner(s) of what the end result will be.

The first question: What do you see as the primary, secondary, or third use for your special room? Is it mainly for movies? Or do you and the kids also like gaming? Maybe it will be a guy’s hangout and more like a sports bar. Would you also like to use it for listening to stereo or multichannel music?

The second question: Do you have any specific or general ideas about the overall feel or aesthetic design of the space? Would you like the feel of the older neighborhood type theaters that were so prevalent before the big-box corporate theaters? Or maybe a room with an art-deco style, like the beautiful Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado. Many of our clients request that the new room match the design elements in other parts of the home.

The third question: Do you have any ideas or expectations about the level of performance for your special space? Building a fairly basic home theater on a modest budget can create a very enjoyable experience. Or, you can kick it up a few notches and go all out to create the ultimate home theater or music room. Most theaters end up somewhere between the two extremes, with adjustments made for the particular tastes, priorities, and budget of the owner.

A designer/ builder who specializes in entertainment spaces will listen carefully to your ideas, make suggestions, and help you sort through all of the choices and decisions to create a detailed final plan. They provide the experience and expertise to balance all of the elements and create a finished entertainment space that will provide years of fun and enjoyment.

I would love to work with you, your designer, and/ or your builder to create a fantastic and fun theater or music room in your home. Call today and we can begin the creative process.

The Custom Quality Theaters Blog

Over the next few weeks and months I will be blogging about many different subjects, all of them related to home theaters, media rooms, music rooms, and home entertainment in general.

The main intention or purpose of these posts is to inform readers about home entertainment venues.

If you are new to the subject and considering an entertainment area for your home then it can give you a starting point and some things to consider as you begin the process. If you are a veteran then some of the posts might give you some insight and help move you along in your quest for audio and video nirvana.

Some of the topics will include the design process, technical aspects, aesthetics, lighting, gear choices, budgeting, and even the occasional movie or music review.

Some background info: From the time I was a little kid I loved movies. There was a relatively small locally owned theater near us, and on Saturday mornings they had the aptly named “Saturday Fun Club”. It cost fifty cents to get in and popcorn was twenty-five cents, a dime extra for butter. It started with cartoons, and then the main feature. It was usually the Lone Ranger, or Hopalong Cassidy, or Roy Rogers. These were always in serial form, where each episode ended with some major unresolved crisis, so that you just had to come back on Saturday to see what happened next. There was much speculation during the week that followed. As we got older our tastes matured along with the movie industry, the technology, and the quality of the productions. Many years later, with the VCR tape, we were able to enjoy uninterrupted movies at home, and the home theater industry had a modest beginning. The one constant for millions of people around the world through all the technological changes has been our love for the movies.

I still love movies as much as when I was a kid, in some ways even more so. I also have a passion for helping people improve the quality of life for themselves and their families, which includes having more fun. So, in the year 2000 I started designing and building home theaters. Custom Quality Theaters has allowed me to combine these two passions, the love for movies and improving the “fun factor”.

I’m also convinced that the design and remodeling process can be fun and rewarding for everyone involved.

I sincerely hope you enjoy my blog. If you have suggestions for topics then please let me know, and I will try to post on them in a future entry.

Thank you, and as Siskel and Ebert used to say: “Let’s go to the movies”.

Custom Quality Theaters in Boulder, CO celebrates 15th anniversary

Custom Quality Theaters in Boulder, CO has announced in a press release the celebration of their 15th anniversary:

Based in Boulder, CO, Custom Quality Theaters is proud to reach their 15-year business anniversary serving Colorado homeowners with high-end custom home theaters, media rooms, music rooms, and more. They are celebrating this exciting milestone with new products and an emphasis on new partnerships with architects, builders, and designers.

Custom Quality Theaters (CQT) offers custom home theater design and home theater installation in Boulder, Denver, Vail, Aspen, Avon and beyond. Founded in August of 2000 by Robert Dreher and his wife Padma, CQT has been working with homeowners to build their dream home theaters whether it’s built from scratch in a new home build, renovating an existing basement space, or designing the space of a new addition onto a home. They are thrilled to have established a reputation for excellence and look forward to serving Colorado for another 15 years (and beyond).

The company has worked with cutting edge technology in the home theater industry from their inception and they intend to continue offering the best new technology available. For example, one of Custom Quality Theater’s new product lines is high fidelity invisible speakers from Amina Technologies. Whether a room demands precision acoustically tuned listening environments or simply an improved television watching experience, CQT is able to work with clients to build exactly what they need.

Through their excellent relationships with their industry associates, Custom Quality Theaters is able to offer VIP access to vendors, as well as being a direct dealer for Amina Invisible Loudspeakers, ATI Amplifiers, JVC D-ILA Projectors, and many others. When asked what he loved the most about building custom home theaters, owner Robert Dreher responded, “I love the creative process of the design and build of a theater project, but especially rewarding is how a well built theater gives years of enjoyment for my customers and their families.”

Dreher continued by discussing his desire to work closer with architects, designers, and builders, “CQT is entering a new phase to ensure the highest levels of performance and aesthetics for theaters and music rooms in luxury homes. This is an opportunity to have fun collaborating with talented people on interesting projects in a way that takes the project to a higher level.” If a project demands a surround sound system and a home theater projector, or the construction of high-end custom home theater or media room, CQT and their partners are confident in their ability to deliver the best.

To the customer thinking a home theater is unrealistic or unnecessary, Dreher states, “The difference in the level of enjoyment between a flat screen TV with a few small speakers compared to a well designed and built home theater is something that has to be experienced to be understood. The same concept applies to the emotional impact of music played through the right gear in an acoustically designed music room.” For more information visit:
